Provisit Educare24 - private health insurance for education-related stays in Germany

Foreign visitors from so-called "third countries" (essentially countries outside Europe) generally require a visa to enter Germany. A prerequisite for obtaining a visa is proof of valid international health insurance in Germany.

However, the authorities do not accept just any foreign health insurance. The insurance must meet certain conditions. It must be valid during the entire stay, it must be valid throughout Europe and it must have a minimum cover of 30,000 euros. Does Provisit Educare24 meet these conditions?

1. Period of validity: The foreign guest can book Provisit Educare24 for up to 48 months. These four years are usually more than enough to attend a language school, find a place at university or do an internship in Germany.

2. Area of validity: With Provisit Educare24 you are insured throughout the EU, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City. There is also worldwide insurance cover for a verifiable maximum stay of six weeks.

3. Minimum cover: The visa authorities require health insurance with cover of at least 30,000 euros to ensure that the foreign guest and their host are financially protected. Provisit Educare24's cover is not limited to 30,000 euros, but is unlimited.

In short: Provisit Educare24 not only meets all the requirements of the authorities, but exceeds them in every respect. That's why we guarantee: Provisit Educare24 will be recognized when you apply for a visa. If, contrary to expectations, this is not the case, or if you are refused a visa for other reasons, you will of course receive a full refund.

Provisit Educare24 is ideal for stays in Germany where an educational purpose is in the foreground or related to a planned course of study, but without the actual course of study having officially begun.

These educational purposes can be a student exchange or another exchange program, or an internship in Germany. Many foreign students arrive before the official start of their studies in order to take part in a preparatory or language course, or to look for a place to study in Germany. That's the kind of stays we made Provisit Educare24 for.

The German Social Security System divides people into groups. These include, amongst others, employees, the self-employed, trainees, pensioners, the unemployed - and students. There are different health insurance regulations for each of these groups.

For every student, including those who come from a third country that requires a visa, the following applies: they need "comprehensive health insurance" because they have student status. You only have student status if you are officially enrolled as a student at a German university and have started the first semester of your degree course.

Most universities in Germany require comprehensive health insurance for enrollment. International health insurance such as Provisit Educare24 is usually not sufficient.

As soon as you have student status, you can join a statutory health insurance scheme, which is a form of comprehensive health insurance. Another form is private comprehensive health insurance.

It all sounds a bit complicated, right? That's why we at DR-WALTER have developed an ideal solution: DR-WALTER Public Health. This is an insurance combination of private international health insurance and statutory health insurance. With DR-WALTER Public Health, you are optimally insured at every stage of your stay in Germany.

Yes, foreign guests have the option of taking out Provisit Educare24 up to one month after the day they enter Germany. So you don't have to, but you can of course also book Provisit Educare24 before you arrive in Germany.

No. We do ask for the start date of your educational measure during the online conclusion of Provisit Educare24, but only for technical reasons. You do not have to submit any documents or evidence from the educational institution to us in order to complete Provisit Educare24.

You can decide for yourself. We offer Provisit Educare24 in four versions: S, M, L and XL. With variant S, you get health insurance, while the other variants also include liability insurance, accident insurance and deportation costs insurance. The M, L and XL variants differ in the scope of benefits. You can find the details in the benefits table above.

What to do in case of an insured event?

FAQ - Frequently asked questions

Health insurance for foreign interns, student applicants and language students

Many guests from abroad come to Germany to do an internship. However, there are different types of internships. Here is an overview of what kind of internship Provisit Educare24 is suitable for.

Some foreign guests come from a country within Europe and usually have health insurance that is valid in Germany and Europe. Other visitors come from a third country (non-European country) and either have no health insurance or no health insurance valid in Germany.

The latter require a visa for their stay in Germany. A prerequisite for the visa is proof of health insurance valid in Europe. If you belong to this group of visitors to Germany, Provisit Educare24 is ideal for your internship.

What do we recommend for the internship of guests from Europe?

It is not compulsory for interns from European countries to take out private health insurance such as Provisit Educare24 because these guests do not need a visa for their internship. However, we also recommend that these interns take out Provisit Educare24 in addition to their existing health insurance. Why?

Citizens of EU member states are generally members of a public health insurance scheme, comparable to the statutory health insurance funds in Germany. The mission of public health insurance funds in Europe is to provide citizens with adequate health protection and healthcare - where they live, namely in their home country.

This is the reason why public health insurance companies do not pay for everything the insured person might need abroad - they usually only pay what they would pay for treatments and measures in their home country. If the foreign guest needs treatment during their internship that is more expensive in Germany than in their home country, their public health insurance will only pay the country's standard rate. The intern would have to pay the rest themselves.

Biggest risk: medical return transport

The biggest cost risk, however, is the medically accompanied return transport to the home country. If our intern becomes so ill that they have to be transported back home (most common reasons: traffic or sports accident), their public health insurance will not usually pay for this. We are talking about several thousand euros and more - sums that usually far exceed the financial means of an intern.

The public health insurance companies themselves recommend taking out additional international health insurance so that you are protected against such cost risks. As Provisit Educare24 not only includes health insurance, but also optional personal liability insurance and accident insurance, the intern is also covered against accidental damage to third-party property or the consequences of a traffic accident.

Before you start your internship in Germany, you should always find out about your health insurance from the organization providing your internship. If it turns out that you do not have sufficient health cover for your internship in Germany, take out Provisit Educare24.

The German social security system is not so easy to understand, especially for guests from outside Europe. To understand when you need which type of health insurance, you should know the following: All people who stay in Germany for a longer period of time are assigned to certain groups by the social security system; they are given a "status".

This includes every citizen as well as every foreign student applicant. Someone who works in a company gets the employee status, the freelancer gets the self-employed status and students of course get the "student status".

Applicants from abroad do not have student status. You only have this status from the first day of the first semester if you are enrolled at a university. Enrolled students can join a German statutory health insurance - student applicants cannot because they do not have student status.

So if you want to travel to Germany to look for a place to study here, take out private international health insurance. Provisit Educare24 is ideal for this. As soon as your studies begin, you have student status and can join a statutory health insurance fund.

Many German universities offer various courses to prepare students for their studies. These include language courses as well as courses to prepare for the respective degree course. There are also preparatory college courses where guests from abroad can gain admission to study in Germany.

These types of preparatory courses often take place on university premises. This can give course participants the impression that they are already students because they feel like students. In addition, the English word "student" does not only mean "Student" in German, but also "pupil" or "learner". So the foreign guest sees himself as a "language student" - and not as a "Sprachschüler" ("language learner"), which he actually is.

For this reason, there is often confusion among guests from abroad: I am a "language student", so I am a student, so I need student health insurance. This seems to be a logical consideration, but it is wrong. As long as the first semester of your official studies hasn't started, you do not have "student status".

What does this have to do with health insurance? In Germany, students can join the statutory health insurance scheme, both German students and foreign students. However, if your studies have not yet officially begun, this is not possible, because you do not have student status. What you need is private international health insurance. This is precisely why we developed Provisit Educare24. With Provisit Educare24, you are optimally insured as a language student or college participant in Germany. As soon as your studies officially begin, you can easily switch to statutory health insurance.
