Salzburg
Next to Vienna, Salzburg is the most famous and most visited city in Austria. Salzburg is even easier to reach from Germany, as the city is located directly behind the Bavarian border.
Salzburg is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful historical cities in Europe. The location of the city at the foot of the Alps is spectacular. The old town is dominated by the mighty Hohensalzburg Fortress, which towers on a rock above the city center.
When you take a walk through Salzburg's old town, you can discover beautiful historic churches, palaces and other buildings from the Middle Ages and Baroque on every corner. The tourist hotspot among Salzburg's houses is Mozart's birthplace. A visit to the museum housed there is not only recommended for Mozart fans.
Tyrol
Tyrol, which borders Bavaria directly to the south, is the most popular federal state in Austria for tourists. This is not surprising, as the Tyrolean mountains offer their visitors dozens of sporting and other activities in both summer and winter.
In summer you can go hiking, climbing and mountain biking in the Tyrolean Alps. And in winter, millions of tourists come to ski, snowboard and toboggan on the magnificent slopes of the western Austrian state.
Both in summer and winter you can enjoy a phenomenally beautiful panorama over the alpine mountains. And on days without any physical activity you can visit some of the most beautiful places in Austria in Tyrol: Innsbruck, Kitzbühel and many other cities.
Carinthia
Carinthia is the southernmost federal state in Austria and, along with Tyrol, the most popular region in the Alpine republic for holidaymakers. Carinthia's appeal is primarily due to its lakes. The state has over 1,200 standing bodies of water.
The largest and most famous of the Carinthian lakes is Lake Wörthersee. Here you can swim and sail in wonderful water temperatures in summer. In the summer months, numerous events take place around the Worter and the other Carinthian lakes. And Carinthia has another plus point: it is the sunniest federal state in Austria.
The Salzkammergut
The Salzkammergut, located on the border of Salzburg and Upper Austria, is also very easy to reach by car from southern Germany. Next to Carinthia, it is the region with the most lakes in Austria.
The lakes of the Salzkammergut, set against the backdrop of the Alps, are a beautiful sight. The Austrian imperial family came here in the 19th century to spend their summer vacation in the lake landscape.
A tourist highlight of the region is the small town of Hallstatt, which, with its houses from the 16th century, is visited by millions of tourists from all over the world every year.
