The legal requirements for health insurance for language students
In Germany, there is a general mandatory health insurance requirement for all residents, regardless of their nationality or the reason for their stay. This also applies to foreign language students who enter the country for a short-term or long-term language course. The type of health insurance required depends on various factors, particularly the person's origin (EU/EEA or third country), the duration of their stay, and their age.
Legal Requirements and Visa Prerequisites
Proof of valid health insurance is a mandatory prerequisite for the insurance of a visa for language acquisition purposes or a residence permit. German diplomatic missions abroad (embassies and consulates) require corresponding proof of insurance when applying for a visa.
For entry and the insurance of a national visa, a so-called "Incoming" insurance (a form of private international health insurance) is generally accepted. This insurance must meet the minimum requirements for a Schengen visa, which includes a minimum coverage of EUR 30,000 for medical emergencies, hospital stays, and repatriation costs.
Options for Language Students
Depending on the individual situation, there are different health insurance options:
EU/EEA Citizens
Language students from countries within the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA) are usually covered by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from their home country. The EHIC ensures that they receive necessary medical care in Germany according to German law. However, it is often advisable to additionally take out private international health insurance, as the EHIC does not cover all services, such as medically necessary repatriation.
Third-Country Nationals
Citizens from so-called third countries (outside the EU/EEA) must provide proof of health insurance for the duration of their stay in Germany. In most cases, private health insurance or special "Incoming" insurance policies for foreign guests are used here. These are often more cost-effective than statutory health insurance but must meet the requirements of the foreigners' authorities (Ausländerbehörden).
Statutory Health Insurance (GKV)
Direct access to statutory health insurance (GKV) usually is not possible for participants of language courses. The GKV is primarily intended for employees, students at state-recognized universities, or persons with permanent residency in Germany.
Age: An important age limit is 30 years old. Foreign students under the age of 30 can usually insure themselves with the GKV at relatively favorable conditions once they begin their studies.
Change of Status: If a language student starts a university degree after their course, they usually switch from the private "Incoming" insurance to the statutory student health insurance, provided they meet the requirements. The private insurance serves as a bridge until enrollment.
Adequate insurance coverage is mandatory
The legal requirements for health insurance for language students in Germany are strict. Adequate insurance coverage is mandatory for entry and residence. While EU citizens can use their EHIC, third-country nationals are usually reliant on private "Incoming" insurance policies. It is crucial that the chosen insurance coverage meets the minimum requirements of the German authorities and is valid for the entire duration of the planned stay.
How long does a language prep course last?
The average duration of a language course for university preparation in Germany depends heavily on the participant's prior knowledge and the required target level (usually C1 or C2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). For students starting from scratch (level A0), the entire process from A0 to the necessary C1 level usually takes between 9 and 12 months of pure course time with full-time instruction (approx. 20-25 lessons per week).
Many universities or private providers structure these courses into modules, with each module (e.g., B1, B2, C1) lasting around two to three months. Those who already have basic knowledge (B1) can shorten the duration accordingly.
